ACCELERATED RESOLUTION THERAPY

Reducing Distress

What Men's Mental Health Treatment Can Look Like

UNDERSTANDING
ART (Accelerated Resolution Therapy)

Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is a trauma-focused psychotherapy designed to help individuals reduce the emotional and physical distress connected to painful memories and experiences. ART combines guided imagery, memory rescripting, and specific eye movements to help the brain process distressing material in a new way, without requiring individuals to repeatedly describe every detail of a traumatic experience.

ART is most commonly used to address trauma and PTSD, and research also suggests potential benefits for symptoms of anxiety, depression, grief, sleep disturbance, and other trauma-related challenges. At The Summit Sanctuary, ART may be incorporated into a highly personalized treatment plan based on each guest's history, symptoms, and clinical needs.

HOW ART IS
Performed

During Accelerated Resolution Therapy sessions, a trained therapist guides the guest through a structured process involving voluntary recall of distressing memories while using sets of horizontal eye movements. The individual remains awake, aware, and in control throughout the session.

As difficult memories are brought to mind, the therapist helps the guest identify and reduce the uncomfortable emotions and physical sensations associated with them. ART also uses a technique known as imagery rescripting, which allows the individual to replace distressing mental images with more adaptive or reassuring imagery while retaining the factual memory of what occurred.

Unlike some forms of trauma therapy, ART does not require the guest to verbally disclose every detail of the traumatic experience. The goal is not to erase the memory, but to change the emotional and physiological response connected to it so that recalling the experience becomes less distressing.

 ART TREATMENT
Benefits

Accelerated Resolution Therapy may help individuals experience meaningful relief from trauma-related symptoms within a relatively brief course of treatment. Research has found improvements in symptoms associated with PTSD, anxiety, depression, emotional distress, and sleep difficulties following ART.

For individuals who feel overwhelmed by intrusive memories, triggers, hyperarousal, guilt, fear, or other effects of unresolved trauma, ART can provide another way to process difficult experiences while building a greater sense of emotional regulation and control.

At The Summit Sanctuary, ART can be integrated with other evidence-based therapies, psychiatric care, neurological interventions, and individualized clinical services as part of a comprehensive approach to mental health and trauma treatment.
