Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

UNDERSTANDING

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a specialized therapy used to help clients process and heal from trauma, which often underlies substance use and mental health disorders. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements or tapping, to facilitate the brain’s natural healing process, allowing clients to reprocess distressing memories.

HOW EMDR IS

Performed

EMDR is conducted in a series of phases, beginning with preparation and establishing a safe environment. Clients focus on traumatic memories while following a specific pattern of eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation, which helps to reduce the intensity of the memory. As clients reprocess the trauma, they replace negative thoughts and emotions associated with it with more adaptive beliefs and feelings. EMDR does not require clients to extensively discuss their trauma, making it a gentler approach for some.

TREATMENT

Benefits

EMDR has proven effective in reducing symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, and depression, helping clients achieve emotional relief and long-term recovery. By addressing and resolving underlying trauma, clients experience greater emotional freedom, reduced triggers for substance use, and enhanced self-esteem. EMDR supports a stable foundation for recovery and helps clients engage more fully in their daily lives, fostering improved relationships and mental well-being.
